The Message of Love | 1Corinthians 13:13 | Get, Do, Be Better

by Daniel Hanson II 24 Jan 2024 0 Comments

In the Bible, faith and hope are both vital components of our spiritual journey. We place our trust in God through faith, knowing that He is in control of our present life and our future eternity. We have hope because we know that God has promised to be with us every step of the way. However, there is one thing that is even greater than faith and hope, and that is love.

Faith Hope Love

In 1 Corinthians 13:13, Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church, "And now abideth faith, hope, charity hope and love abide us, these three; but the greatest of these three remain faith hope, is these three things remain, faith hope and charity." In this blog post, we will explore the importance of love as highlighted in this passage and other Bible verses. We will also identify three major points that illustrate the significance of love in our lives.

In 1 Corinthians 13:13, Paul writes "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love." This key verse is often quoted in Christian circles, but what does it truly mean? In this blog post, we will explore the importance of love being greater than faith hope and love being abide more than faith and between these three things, faith hope and love, supported by other Bible verses. We will also highlight three major points that can be derived from these verses.

So Now Faith | Love Remain

crosses, clouds, faith

The first major point is that love is eternal and remains even when other things fade away. 1 Corinthians 13:13 says, "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." The Greek word for charity is "agape," which means selfless love. This type of love is not based on feelings or emotions but on a decision to love others as Christ loves us.

Unlike faith and hope, the three things which are necessary to remain here for our current lives and future eternity, love is not bound by time. It is a love that remains forever. Romans 5:5 says, "And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." This verse emphasizes the truth of how love is to remain a constant presence in our lives, even in times of hardship or disappointment.

Love remains constant and enduring in the present life and the afterlife. 1 Corinthians 13:13 states that love abides, which is a powerful promise. Love is a gift that lasts, even in the midst of trials and tribulations. In Romans 5:5, it says that God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and that love will abide and never leave us. This will love remain and is why love is a bedrock for all relationships or circumstances we may encounter.

Spiritual Gifts | Three things remain

tea lights, candles, light

The second major point is that love is the greatest spiritual gift and should be prioritized. As 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 does state, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."

Then continues "And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing."

This passage highlights how all spiritual bounty from the Holy Spirit are meaningless without love. No matter how significant our gifts or accomplishments may be, they are nothing if we do not have love. Galatians 5:6 also reinforces this point, "For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love." In other words, faith is only valuable if it is accompanied by love. Love is the foundation upon which our faith and salvation is built.

Love is the greatest spiritual gift. Among the gifts mentioned in the Bible, love is considered the greatest. Paul's passage in our bible study of 1 Corinthians 12-14 discusses different ones, but he concludes in chapter 14:1, "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy." Gifts are important, but love is the foundation we seek. Without love, spiritual gifts are lost or rendered incomplete, as we see in 1 Corinthians 13, where Paul says that we can have all gifts but love abide and if we do not have faith hope and love it, it is meaningless.

Whilst faith and hope are important, love surpasses both in significance. This is exemplified in 1 John 4:8, where it states that God is love. Love is one of the three but the greatest attributes that define God's essence, and therefore, is of utmost importance in our spiritual lives. While faith and hope are directed towards God, heaven, and our future, love is directed towards others, heaven, and our present. It is the foundation and soul of our Christian walk, and without it, our faith and hope become meaningless.

The third major point is that love is the foundation of faith and hope, and without it the three remain faith hope and, they lose their significance. 1 Corinthians 13:13 states, "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." This verse reveals how love is the greatest because it is the basis for faith and hope. Without love, faith and hope lose their meaning. At the core of faith hope and love of our faith is the love that God has for us. John 3:16 states, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

This verse highlights how God's love for us was the motivation for sending His Son to save us. Our hope and expectation for eternal life is, so now faith is also rooted in God's love for us. 1 John 4:7-8 says, "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." These verses emphasize how love is the foundation for our faith and hope.

Despite the significance of prophecies, they will eventually pass away, as stated in 1 Corinthians 13:8. These prophecies give us a glimpse of God's plans, yet they are partial and incomplete compared to the fullness of knowledge that will be revealed in our eternal life. Unlike prophecies, love does not fail but is eternal. The glory of love outshines all others because it persists even in the sight of Christ in heaven. When we come face-to-face with Christ, we will fully comprehend the depth and magnitude of His love for us—a love that surpasses knowledge, a love that never ends.

Abideth Faith: The Interplay of Love

heart, love, romance

The chapter and third and final point centers around the concept to abide faith, which underscores the interplay between faith and love. Faith is a strong belief in God and His promises, while love is an active expression of that faith. As outlined in James 2:26, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

This verse demonstrates that faith, without the active expression of love, is as lifeless as a person without the spirit. Although faith is crucial in our spiritual journey, it must be accompanied by love to be truly alive and effective. This chapter reminds us of the importance of coupling our faith with active expressions of love towards others.

In conclusion, the Bible emphasizes the importance of love as being even greater than faith and hope. Love is eternal, the greatest spiritual gift, and the foundation for our faith and hope. Without love, our spiritual journey loses its sense and its significance and eternity. As we continue to grow in our faith, do a bible study or two, may we always remember to prioritize love, knowing that it is the greatest of all.

1 Corinthians 13:13 reminds us that the greatest of these three things, faith, hope, and love, is love. Love is the most important element of our lives, as it is the foundation for our walk with God and our relationships with others. Love remains constant and endures, for the present life and afterlife. Love is the greatest spiritual gift that we can seek, as it makes the other three things, love remain faith hope and all other spiritual gifts meaningful. Let us, therefore, focus our hearts on love, seeking it above all else, trusting that our faith and hope will follow in its abundance.
